Quantum of Solace

This movie has the stupidest title since Never Say Never Again (if you count that one) but has the best story since, well, the last one.

Now there are many reviewers out there that don’t seem to like the film. I am really not sure why. There are good action sequences, ok plot, fair acting (except for Gemma Arterton. She was so bad I thought it was a fake English accent). No it is not as good as Casino Royale but that is a hard plateau to reach. I am not making excuses for the film makers cause they do usually fall flat with the script and plot pretty quickly with a money maker like this but they did a decent job with this movie.

Quantum starts right where Royale left off. It is a sequel unlike the other James Bond movies. Bond is looking for revenge in the death of, he won’t admit this, his love Vespa. There are a couple of returning characters: Daniel Craig of course, Judy Dench, Giancarlo Giannini and Jeffery Wright. There are also some new faces. Mathieu Amalric plays the villain Dominic Greene. I see a pattern first Mr. White and now a Mr. Greene, will there be a Mr. Pink soon? There are the Bond girls played by Olga Kurylenko, who does a much better job than she did in Max Payne but not by much, and Gemma Arterton who, as I mentioned before, is just terrible. This movie has a much straighter storyline than most other Bond films but it is still a bit convoluted just to keep you with the movie.

With Bond movies I can’t help but talk about the title song “Another Way to Die”. It is a bit strange. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I heard it was being sung by the odd combination of Jack White and Alicia Keyes. Each of their voices sound great with the music but at the chorus, when they sing together, it sounds like some bad high school recital. Their voices just don’t mesh. But over all the song isn’t too bad.

Anyways, the way the movie ends I think it is obvious that there is going to be another film. If there isn’t I would be incredibly surprised. I look forward to seeing a next one. I just hope the movie quality doesn’t drop.
